Shorin-ryu Shorinkan Association - Shugoro Nakazato Sensei

Shugoro Nakazato Sensei

Shugoro Nakazato Sensei

Is the founder of the Okinawan Shorin-ryu Shorinkan Association whose head quarters are located in Naha Okinawa.  The association was started in the early 70's to bring Shorin-ryu ( Kobayashi-te ) to the world.  Sensei Nakato originally sent 7 of his black belts to the United States to begin teaching this system of self devlopment and self protection.

Among these students was Noel Smith, who began learning Shorin-ryu under Sense Nakazato while stationed in Okinawa durring, after his enlistment ended, he returned to Okinawa for 6 years where he lived and studied under Shugoro Nakazato Sensei.  He trainied at Senseis dojo night and day, and this direct training allowed him uncensored ensight in to what Shorin-ryu karate is, how it is to be taught.  At Sensei Smiths dojo we say we "teach karate as it was intended", becuase this is how Shugoro Nakazato Sensei taught it to Sensei Smith.  Today there are many Shorin-ryu Shorinkan dojos here is the lineage of the original 7 black belts.

Chibana And Nakazaton Sensei

If you are looking for a martial art to learn, to help learn Shorin-ryu Shorinkan "Kobayashi-te" maybe just what you are looking for.  Shorin-ryu is well over 350 years old, it was named Shorin-ryu by Chibana Chosin Sensei which reads "Shaolin" in Chinese.  Maybe he did this as a way to honor, or show respect, to those he learned from.  In Okinawa their fighting art was called "Te"  and depending on the city you studied you might learn NahaTe, ShuriTe etc.  Sense Chibana learned ShuriTe from Anko Itosu, who had learned Okinawa Te from  Matsumura Sokon ( Refered to as the Miyamoto Musashi of Okinawa ).  Durring the of Sokon and Itosu there was a lot development occuring, Okinwan Te was blending ideas from Chinese Kenpo into their systems of Te.

Today, we strive to maintain the original intent of those who came before us, we do not change the kata.  No matter the forum, remain true to the original teachings.  We do not change it to make it easier or try to align it with modern MMA.

Shorinkan Noel Smith

Shugoro Nakazato Sensei learned a pure system from Chibana Sensei, who learned from Anko Itosu Sensei and this system is being perserved by Sensei Noel Smith and his students at O.B.I Karate School in Virginia beach.
