California Shorin-ryu Shorinkan Karate

Sensei Sam Ahtye currently holds the rank of Kyoshi Nanadan ( 7th Dan ) in theShorin-ryu Shorinkan association

now headed by Sensei Minoru Nakazato who assumed the leadership role prior to the passing of Sensei Shugoro Nakazato. 

50 years in studying Martial arts

Sensei Ahtye started training in martial arts in 1967 and eventually found his way to Clarence Lee, who trained directly under Sensei Chibana as well as other Chinese systems. 

In1980 he earned his Sandan ( 3rd degree black belt ) from Sensei Shugoro Nakazato and five years later his Godan.

When and Where are Classes?

Regular classes are Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 5:30 to 7:30, with kobudo (traditional weapons) training for advanced students happening from 7:30 to 8pm.  Classes are held in the dance studio of the SOMArts building at 934 Brannan Street, San Francisco.

The Dojo Kun

一、人格完成に努むること1. Strive for good moral character.(Respect, Humility and Patience are virtues taught by example.)

(Seek the truth; speak and act from the heart.)

3. Cultivate perseverance.
(The process is the goal, only through hard work can we earn real experience.)

一、礼儀を重んずること
4. Develop a respectful attitude.
(Understand the difference between etiquette in outward form and etiquette from the heart.)

一、血気の勇を戒むること
5. Restrain aggression through spiritual attainment.
(Karate is the art of life protection; practice compassion.  Remember, Karate is a lifetime study.)
